DEFINITION OF HOLISTIC THERAPY

The term "holistic" refers to looking at a person as whole. That is, body, mind and spirit.

Illness is perceived as a state of dis-ease in the body, an outer symptom of an underlying imbalance which could have originated from a physical or emotional cause but which in turn effect the body, mind and spirit. A holistic therapist does not merely take account of the physical symptoms being presented but looks at the client as a whole, and by relaxing and balancing the body systems allows the clients own healing processes to be activated.

I have been a qualified holistic therapist for fifteen years and I am trained in many disciplines which are aromatherapy, (including making my own aromatherapy products), reflexology, swedish body massage, reiki healing levels 1,2 & 3, hot stone massage, hydrotherm(water bed massage), hopi ear candling, holistic facials, crystal healing, nutrition and counselling for therapies.

I have seen the benefits that holistic therapies can offer for many people for all kinds of conditions and illnesses and  also for stress relief /aid to relaxation. I became interested in therapies when I was working as a masseur for a large well know health spa. I had completed their in house training in massage and facials and this gave me  the inspiration to continue my studies and deepen and expand my knowledge into more subjects at college and also training with private practitioners of various disciplines.
From my previous work in community care I had seen first hand the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs that doctors seemed to hand out liberally to many of my ageing clients at that time and it definitely, in my opinion, lacked an holistic approach to the patient. Very often repeat prescriptions were issued with out any checks or updates on the health condition that was being treated. One small very frail lady was on a  veritable cocktail of prescription drugs. I think nearly 8 different tablets per day and one day the side effects of all these drugs combined caused her to have a convulsion which threw her from one side of the room to the other.   Leaving her black and blue. I thought she had been beaten up when I  called on her after it had happened. The medics had said that in all likelihood it was a combined effect of mixed side effects. And she was not the exception to the norm. The majority of people that I went out to, to care for in the community were on numerous tablets per day, blood pressure and diuretics being common.
Also because a close relative of mine went undiagnosed with a serious brain virus for nearly three weeks after medical attention had been sought for him, my confidence in the medical profession was somewhat shaken.
So personally before I consult a doctor I use therapies and self help these days.

DISCLAIMER
However I am not medically trained and anyone reading this blog who has any health condition, serious or not is advised to seek the advice of their doctor or consultant before using or trying any of the therapies or products that I will discuss here. If I were to see you for a hands on therapy I would have to do an in depth consultation first to ascertain the suitability of the treatment and this would include medical history, allergies, lifestyle, diet etc. After that if any conditions were apparent that I was not sure about I would have to obtain your doctor's permission before I could proceed. So it is wise to bear this in mind when reading things on the internet. OTHERWISE YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK AND I DO NOT ACCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY HERE.
