SWEDISH BODY MASSAGE

Swedish body massage differs somewhat from aromatherapy massage in that it is a much more brisk massage and you do not necessarily have to use essential oils, a carrier oil would probably be sufficient. Swedish body massage is good for pre or post sports and although the therapist will use effleurage, compression, petrissage and friction movements the pressure is increased and they will also use movements called tapotement (percussion) . Percussion movements are a series of brief, brisk, rapidly applied contracts of the hands or part of the hands to the skin in alternation. These movements are classified as.


1. Tapping-tips of the fingers
2. Slapping-palmar surface of the fingers
3. Hacking- ulnar border of the hand
4. Cupping-fingers and palms forming a concave surface
5. Pounding
6. Beating- Clenched fists palms down


Beneficial effects of petrissage are


1. Aids venous and lymphatic flow
2. To stretch shortened tissues
3. To loosen adherent tissues
4. aids absorption of substances within the tissues
5. Elimination of waste products will be increased


Beneficial effects of friction


1. Loosen adherent skin
2. Loosen scar tissue with great care
3.Helps relieve pain from within.
